Stellwag, August 'Gus'

Orangeburg, NY - Tappan Location

5/10/31 – 7/10/19

Most of his friends called him Gus!

Born in the Bronx, only child of Elizabeth (Boylan) and August (Al) Stellwag, he graduated from Our Lady of the Angels Elementary School, Fordham Prep, Fordham University, and Columbia University. He enjoyed all his educational experiences, so it was not surprising that he became a High School English Teacher and, after 20 years, he went back to Graduate School and became a School Librarian.

His teaching career began in Salesian High School in New Rochelle and, years later, Fordham Prep.

In 1961, he married the love of his life, Anna Costello Stellwag, and moved to Orangeburg in Rockland County. While in Fordham College, he participated in the ROTC Program and subsequently joined the Army as a Lieutenant in Korea (1953-55).

August loved to read, write (e.g. the History of St. Catharine’s Church), short wave radio, reminiscing with his boyhood friends Arthur and Charlie, Packanack Lake, movies and music of the Forties and Fifties.

August is survived by his wife, Anna; his nieces Mary Catherine Roche, Patti Vitarelli, Eileen Portelance; his nephews, Matthew James Costello, Kevin Costello, Steven Costello, and their families.

Visiting hours will be held at Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan on Friday, July 12th, from 4-7pm, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Catharine’s Church, 523 Western Highway in Blauvelt on Saturday, July 13th, at 9:30am. Burial will follow in Rockland Cemetery, 201Kings Highway in Sparkill.
