Waffenschmidt, John G.

Blauvelt, NY - Tappan Location

John G. Waffenschmidt passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 5th, 2018 at his home in Blauvelt, NY. Born on June 7th, 1955 in Astoria, NY, John was the only child of the late John and Katherine Waffenschmidt. He grew up in Queens, NY and received his B.S. from SUNY New Paltz, and later his M.A. from Queens College. John passionately worked his career as an Environmental Scientist and certified Ecologist, dedicated to bettering the world for generations to come. His career lead him to work for Covanta, where John was still employed at the time of his passing. One of the projects that John was most proud of was the Chester Environmental Partnership, an organization led by community and business leaders of Chester, PA focused on reducing emission and negative environmental exposures. He was an active member of the organization, and was awarded for his involvement in the community and his tireless work with the group. As a direct result of this partnership, John helped Covanta become the second publicly traded company to have an environmental justice policy.

John married his beloved wife, Patricia, in 1992. They first made their home in Flushing, NY where they had two children, Bianca and Johnny. John and Pat moved to Blauvelt in 2000, fulfilling their dream of creating a welcoming home with a large backyard for outdoor activities with their children.

John was an avid cyclist and mountaineer, which lead him to travel the world to complete his many athletic triumphs. An enthusiastic New York sports fan, John especially loved the New York Red Bulls and Brooklyn Nets. Recently he had taken up an interest in MMA fighting and traveled often to watch the fights. He was also a man of the arts, enjoying concerts that ranged from Carnegie Hall orchestras to Broadway shows. However, the anthem of John's life was rock and roll, coining him the nick name “Johnny Rock and Roll". He shared his love of these activities with his many friends and family.

Family and friends invited to Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan on Sunday, Dec. 9th, from 2-4 and 7-9pm for visitation.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, Dec. 10th, 10am at St. John the Baptist RC Church in Piermont, NY.

In honor of John’s dedication to the environment the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the Chester Environmental Partnership.
