IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ancilla
Steller
June 16, 1937 – March 31, 2024
Our Mother Ancilla (Anne) Steller passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024 after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's. She was 86.
Anne was born in New York City on June 16, 1937. She graduated from Astoria High School, and then worked in New York City as a Comptometer Operator.
She married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Steller, in 1957 and resided together in Flushing, NY. They eventually moved to Elmhurst Queens, where they raised their three children, Judy, Lawrence, and Linda, in a three-family apartment complex together with her mother and father Orazia Giummarra and Conrad Giummarra, her sister and brother-in-law, Carmela and Joesph Ruggiero and their four children, Lisa, Laurie, Susan and Frank. In 1972, they moved to Rockland County to Pearl River, New York. While her then husband Lawrence continued to work for the NYPD, Anne started working at Federal Paperboard in nearby Montvale, New Jersey. This is where she began her 15 year career as an accounting secretary to the assistant controller, then eventually as a personal computer trainer traveling across the East Coast. It was there at Federal Paperboard in 1974 that she met her best friend of 50 years, Diane Bartlet.
In 1974, Anne and Lawrence received news that their daughter Linda had been diagnosed with leukemia. Together took amazing care of Linda and made decisions that saved her life.
Back in the 60s, 70s and 80s, Anne enjoyed spending time at Jones Beach with her family, camping with friends in the Catskills and Lake George.
In the early 1980s, Lawrence and Anne divorced and still had family gatherings together after he remarried, and she entered a 20 year relationship with her partner, Norman.
In her retirement in the 90s, Anne was a frequent traveler. She loved Atlantic City, going on cruises and especially loved traveling to Italy to visit her family in Genoa. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and she was 99.9% unbeatable at playing Scrabble.
She was an amazing artist and she also enjoyed designing stained glass pieces.
Anne is survived by her children Judy DeParto (Joe), Lawrence Steller IV and Linda Reiner (Bill). She was a devoted grandmother to Jaclyn DeParto, Marissa DeParto, Billy Reiner and Carly Reiner. She has one adorable great grandchild, two year old Margot Grace DeParto.
She is also survived by her dear sister Carmela Ruggiero, her sweet sister and brother in law Marilyn and Kent Howe, her nieces and nephews… Lisa, Laurie, Susan, Frank, Kaaren, Kathleen and Kent Jr., her cousins Ancilla, Remo, Vanda, Ricardo and family in Genoa, Italy.
She was predeceased by her parents Conrad and Orazia Giummarra, her Aunt Gianna Jumara, her ex-husband of 25 years Lawrence Steller and her partner of 20 years Norman Waterman.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Ancilla Steller's name to the Alzheimer's Association or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
