Obituary

Annamma Thomas of Bardonia, New York, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the age of eighty-two.

Born on March 23, 1943, in Aluva, Kerala, India, she was the seventh of ten children to the late Mr. Accalloor Mathai Varkey and Mrs. Aleyamma Varkey.

She is survived by her three daughters: Mariyam (Bindu), Alice (Beena), and Sara (Binu); sons-in-law: Jackson Varnan and Jerry Skorpil; grandsons: Paul and Benjamin Varnan; adopted son(dog): Captain; sisters: Aley Thomas, Sara Ambatt, and Rachel George; sisters-in-law: Ammani Cherian, Mariamma Mathai, and Sarasu Varghese; brother-in-law: George Palakalathil; along with 15 nieces, 23 nephews, plus over 100 great and great-great nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her late husband, Mr. Mathew K. Thomas, her parents: the late Mr. A.M. Varkey and the late Mrs. Aleyamma Varkey; her late brothers:  O. V. Mathai, T. V. Thomas, Varghese Varkey, and Jacob Varkey; and late sisters: Mrs. Leelamma Pailo & Mrs. Marykutty Roy; late BIL's:  Pilo Maliakel, Thomas P Thomas,  John Ambatt,  Joy K. Thomas,  George K. Thomas, Johny Thomas,  T. Cheryan &  K. S. Varkey; late SIL: Mrs. Kunjamma Jacob, Mrs. Mary Varkey & Mrs. Sosamma Joy; and nephews: Scaria Maliakel, Shaji George & Achamon George.  We apologize in advance if we omitted anyone; it is not intentional.

Mathew and Annamma began their married life in Rajasthan, India.  After having three daughters, they had an opportunity to immigrate to the US in 1975. The couple moved to Rockland County, NY in 1977 from Brooklyn, NY and began raising their daughters who joined them from India in 1979.

Annamma worked in hospitals across New York City and Rockland County, retiring from Nyack Hospital. She was a dedicated nurse, a nurturing mother, a loving wife, and a pillar of strength to her family and community. She was known for her generous spirit, quick wit, love of cooking, and tireless work ethic. During her golden years, Mummy overcame cancer, countless surgeries, and complications from Parkinson's Disease. Her resilience to live was beyond measure. She enjoyed watching Malayalam soaps, game shows, comedies & movies, doing crossword puzzles, knitting, tinkering with old watches, and singing old Malayalam Christian songs with her daughter at home and on the road. She also enjoyed eating many diverse types of food that her daughters ordered.

Wake service will be held on Friday, August 15 at 5:00pm at Tappan Reformed Church, 35 Kings Highway, Tappan, NY 10983

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 16 at 9:30am at Tappan Reformed Church followed by burial service at the Tappan Cemetery.

Repast after the interment at St. John Malankara Orthodox Church of India at 12 noon, 331 Blaisdell Road, Orangeburg, NY 10962
