IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eleanor Anne
Ancin
April 22, 1927 – November 3, 2023
On Friday, November 3, 2023, after a long and wonderful life, our mother Eleanor Anne (Ruffner) Ancin passed away peacefully at the age of 96.
Ellie was born on April 22, 1927, in Lebanon, Ohio, the youngest of Alma (Christie) and Jesse Ruffner's four children. During the Great Depression, Ellie, along with her sisters Lois and Jeanne and her brother Bill, lived with their grandparents Grace and William Christie, while their mother Alma travelled for work. Growing up among her extended family, despite these challenging times, provided Ellie with wonderful memories, love for family and an appreciation for their contributions and rich history, which dated back to the civil war, that she sought to pass on to her children and grandchildren. It was Grace and William's calm, inclusive and community-minded natures that instilled positive characteristics in Ellie, that lasted throughout her life.
In 1949, Ellie graduated from Miami University, in Dayton, Ohio, where she studied Spanish and was an active member of her sorority, Delta Zeta. Her interest in language would eventually take her to Washington, DC where she assumed a government translation and code cracking position with the United Staes Government. This move to D.C. would prove to be a pivotal turning point in her life. It was at a boarding house in D.C., in the communal dining room, where Ellie first met her husband Edward Ancin in 1950, when he was transitioning from his commission as a Naval aviator to the FBI. They would eventually marry at St. Matthew's Cathedral on May 2,1953 and go on to enjoy a long and happy marriage, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary this past May.
Immediately following Ed and Ellie's marriage, Ed, who was a Special Agent with the FBI was assigned to a field office in Kentucky. The young couple spent their honeymoon traveling through the southeast on their way to Kentucky, only for Ed to be reassigned to the New York City office shortly upon arrival. Ed and Ellie headed back north and resided in Edgewater, NJ for several years, before settling in their home on Western Highway in Blauvelt in 1958, where they continued to live together up until Ellie's passing.
It was in Blauvelt, where Ellie joined and eventually became an elder within the wonderful community of Greenbush Presbyterian Church, as well as serving as the first elder at the Presbyterian General Assembly. She remained active in the church up until its closing in 2016.
Ellie enjoyed many lifelong friendships including the DeSimones, Bevans, and Howes, and the entire Ancin family shares many wonderful memories spent with these friends who became our 'extended' families.
Edward and Ellie were avid travelers in their early years spending time travelling throughout, Europe, including Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Czechoslovakia, as well as visiting Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Egypt.
Predeceased by her parents, Alma and Jesse Ruffner; sister and brother-in-law Lois and Tom Plank; sister Jeanne Ruffner; and brother and sister-in-law Bill and Anne Ruffner. Ellie leaves behind and will be missed by her loving husband of 70 years Edward Ancin. Children: Melanie (Peder) Scott; Michele (Gordon) Duncan; Marita Ancin; Matthew (Jodi) Ancin; and Marty (Kim) Ancin. Grandchildren: Scott (Sarah) Duncan, Claire Duncan, Ava (Jake) Benzian; Spencer (Alice), Katherine, Tressa and Brenton Scott; Alyssa (Brad) Shelofsky, Paul Ancin; and Michael (Justine) Ancin, Olivia (Dustin) DeVoe, Elizabeth and Lucas Ancin.
