On January 13, 2025, Eleanor T. Casey, 98, passed away peacefully at her daughter's Pearl River home after a long, fulfilling life.
Eleanor lived her life with dignity and unwavering grace. Her gentle spirit, elegant demeanor, and quiet wisdom were a source of inspiration to her family, friends, and community.
She was born in Manhattan in 1926 to Nora and Peter O'Shea. She graduated from Cathedral High School and later secretarial school. In 1950, Eleanor married the love of her life, James L. Casey. They moved to Orangeburg in 1958. Eleanor was a parishioner at St. Catharine's Church in Blauvelt for over six decades. She had a 30-year career keeping the books in the payroll office at St. Dominic's Home.
Eleanor was active in the PTA and local politics. In later years, she often went to the Orangetown Senior Activity Center. Eleanor loved to travel, she enjoyed swimming, and she appreciated a good book. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew her as "Nanny."
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband James, her sister Mary, and her brother Peter. She is survived by sons James Colin and his wife Jane Anne, Kevin and his wife Christine, and daughter Patricia Johnson and her husband James; her grandchildren Corinne (Brian), Neil (Shirley), Patrick (Kalynn), Sinead, Kelly (Dominic), and Meghan; and her great-grandchildren Trevor and Jessica Elsie Kanhofer, Logan Eleanor and Andrew Loughlin, and Austin Dawn Casey. Eleanor is also survived by her sister-in-law Patricia Harvey and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Catharine's Church in Blauvelt with burial to follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Nanuet. Visiting hours will be Monday, 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital would be appreciated.
