Obituary

On Monday, July 1, 2024, Frederick (Fred)Berberich, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 84 in Orangeburg, NY.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather as well as being a life-long, loyal Yankee fan and a world-class "teaser".

Fred is remembered for his tremendous strength, his loving nature and his incredible sense of humor.  Anyone who met Fred was charmed by his warm demeanor and his infectious smile.

Shortly after graduating high school in 1958, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he honorably served for 4 years.  After completing Submarine School (not a small feat with his 6'4" frame), Fred served the remainder of his active duty on the USS Harder and the USS Entemedor.   Once back in the Bronx, Fred met the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Linda.  They married in 1964 and started a family before moving to Tappan, NY.

Fred served on the NYPD in the 1960's and 1970's.  He was part of the Tactical Police Force (TPF) where he was assigned many dangerous and notable jobs.  Although he was an avid Elvis fan, one of Fred's more notable assignments with the TPF was providing crowd control on the field at Shea Stadium for the Beatle's first American concert.   Fred transferred to Motorcycle Precinct 1 where he worked until his retirement from the force.  After retiring from the NYPD, Fred (aka Mr. B) became a beloved school bus driver for multiple generations of children. Fred and Linda eventually moved to Cold Spring, NY where they lived for ten years before returning to Rockland County.

Fred is predeceased by his father Frederick and his mother Evelyn.  He is survived by his wife Linda; sisters Arlene (Patrick) Diskin and Edna (John) Claps; daughter Laura (Tim) Cumpston, son Fred (Marirose) Berberich Jr.; and grandchildren, Ashley (Gary) LaLonde, Tyler Russell, Emily Berberich and Fred Berberich III; as well as his beloved dog and trusty companion Louie.

A celebration of Fred's well-lived life will take place at Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan on Monday, July 8th from 10am to 1pm. A funeral service will be held at 1pm with burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association .
