George William Griepenburg of Closter, NJ passed away August 7,2022. "A life well lived" does not even begin to capture the magic that was his journey. George, born in Dumont, NJ, was one of 11 Griepenburg children. At the age of 18, he stepped up for his country and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS LSM-52 as a Culinary Specialist. Following his service, George returned home and met the love of his life, Anne. Together they built a home in Closter where they raised their daughters, Carol and Linda. Always a fan of company and good times, George hosted countless parties at the home, where old friends and acquaintances gathered regularly.
George was a bartender of over 50 years at the Closter Rec., where he made his world-famous roast beef sandwiches that former customers still rave about to this day. If you had sat for lunch and/or drinks with "Grip" you'd never forget him. He was truly one of a kind personality that lived life to the fullest.
George is preceded in death by his wife Anne and his Daughter Carol and is survived by his daughter Linda, son in-law Jim and grandchildren Jimmy (Alma) Gordon, Kim (Mark) Collins, and Matt (Francesca) Aballi.
