Obituary

Jerry Lennert Fjermestad, born November 15, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 16, 2026. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Jerry will be missed for his passion for learning and desire for life.

Jerry leaves behind his beloved wife Virginia Fjermestad of 45 years. Their marriage was filled with adventure and a love for their family. He is also survived by his daughter Dana Dundrea, son-in-law Jeffrery Dundrea, son Timothy Fjermestad and grandchildren Norah Dundrea, Jeffrey Dundrea and Nathan Dundrea. Jerry was predeceased by his sister Joan Binkley.

Jerry’s dream was fulfilled as he worked up until his death. He retired in July as a Professor Emeritus from New Jersey Institute Technology. He loved his profession and was deeply devoted to the success of his graduate students. His path to professor included obtaining five higher education degrees from top schools including a BA in Chemistry from Pacific Lutheran University, a Masters of Psychology from State University of New York at Cortland, a Masters of Operations Research at New York University, an MBA from Iona University and a PhD in Management from Rutgers University. As a professor, Jerry had over 150 publications including books still available for purchase and was cited almost 8,000 times in other academic research works.

In his spare time, Jerry loved baseball. He will be remembered as a father who played catch with his kids and was their number one fan at all their games. Jerry loved the New York Yankees and could always be found listening to a game while sitting outside in his favorite chair in the sun. He loved nature and shared great memories of his youth at Long Island beaches and the forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

When Jerry wasn’t teaching, he enjoyed traveling with his family to new and exciting places. His favorite mode of transportation was a cruise ship. He visited many destinations including the Mediterranean, the Baltic, Alaska and more. Jerry also spent time in Beijing and Hong Kong, China. Additionally, he traveled across the country visiting many state and national parks. You could always find him with a camera in his hand waiting for the perfect shot.

Jerry will be remembered for his determination for life. He never gave up on an opportunity to live and always believed each day he would be better than the day before. Jerry’s legacy will forever be etched on our hearts his wisdom will live on in all of us.
