Obituary

John Joe Conway

Aug. 16,1933 to Nov. 18,2022

We are sad to announce the passing of John Joseph Conway: loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. Long time resident of Tappan, NY (55 years) formerly of Ryer Ave. in the Bronx. John was born to Joseph and Sarah (McMann) Conway. John was the oldest son of nine children, seven sisters and a brother. John married the love of his life Teresa (Mangan). They were married 61 years before her passing in 2018. He was preceded by his sister Dolores (Betty) and husband Gil Polanco, Catherine (Kay) and husband Jack Whalen, Mary (Patricia) and husband Bill Black, brothers-in-law Edward Cabrera and Timothy Tighe, and sister-in-law Barbara Conway. He is survived by his remaining sisters Eileen Cabrera, Agnes and Joe, Ronnie and James Lamatina and Susie and Joe Sacino and his brother Vincent Conway. He loved all his of sisters, his brother, his sister-in-law, and brothers-in-law. He loved family parties and really enjoyed teasing his sisters every chance he could get. He is survived by his children and their significant others, Ellen and Steve Drown, John and Kathy Conway, Patrick and Eileen Conway, and Peter Conway and Brian Mateja. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their significant others, Bryon, Patrick, John and Tara, Chris and Jen, Kevin and Matilda, Kaitlyn and Chris, Brenden, and Erin. He was also blessed with two great grandsons, Sean and Owen. Grandpa loved playing and vacationing with his grandchildren through the years. He was also Uncle John to many nieces and nephews and loved them all.

John graduated from Bronx Vocational High School where he learned his carpentry skills and went on to City College to further his education. In June 1955, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. During his time in Germany, he ran his own carpentry shop and learned to sing German songs. He continued his service as a resident in Rockland as an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Piermont, NY. Once he returned from Germany, he was a carpenter in NYC and became a member of N.Y.C. District Council of Carpenters. John was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus Piermont Council serving as 3 rd Degree Knight and Grand Knight. He also enjoyed marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pearl River with the Knights for many years. John coached championship teams for CYO Basketball at St. Simon Stock parish in the Bronx. After moving to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish in Tappan, he started a charter for CYO Boys Basketball (1971). In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandsons and their friends play basketball ringing his cowbell and amping up the crowd to cheer the team on to victory.

John enjoyed traveling with Teresa with many friends and family throughout the years, having travelled the USA and Europe. He had a passion for Irish Ceili dancing and enjoyed traveling throughout the Rockland countryside to dance with all the Irish Lassies! He loved being an outdoorsman and spent his time outdoors hunting and hiking, including trips to Montana and New Foundland.

Dad also took time to write memoirs about his family where his love and faith in God is evident in his writings. Dad believed that, "when it gets to be too much call out to God, He promises to listen. And He will Answer." John Joe is finally reunited with his Irish lassie- the love of his life Teresa, dancing together again in Heaven. Rest easy dear One of the Nine.
