IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John
Coritsidis
August 17, 1948 – June 4, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Coritsidis, a man whose life was defined by love, service, and a deep sense of community. Born on the serene Greek island of Nisyros in 1948 to Constantine and Maria Coritsidis, John's journey was marked by remarkable milestones and enduring relationships.
In 1960, at the age of 12, John, his mother, and siblings embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to New York on the Greek ocean liner "Vasilissa Frederiki." The family settled in Washington Heights, northern Manhattan, where John's innate ability to form lasting friendships began to flourish.
John's educational journey took him through PS 189 and Junior High School 52 in Inwood. He later moved to Jackson Heights, Queens, graduating from Newtown High School in 1967. Soon after, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving as a First Class Private in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. His service to his country was a testament to his character and dedication, receiving a Medal of Honor upon his discharge.
Returning home, John pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Queens College in 1973 and a Master's degree from Brooklyn College. He began a long career with the United States Postal Service in Manhattan, where he worked diligently as a Supervisor until his retirement in 2010.
John's love for sports was evident throughout his life. He played soccer for Doxa, Newtown High School, and Queens College. His athleticism extended to many sports, and he shared his passion by refereeing soccer and lacrosse games in Rockland County, NY. For nearly 40 years, he resided there with his beloved wife, Tina, and their son, Christopher.
A fateful vacation in Nisyros led John to meet his bride. After returning to New York, he drove to Montreal to propose, marking the beginning of a beautiful love story. They married in 1978 and celebrated 45 years of marriage filled with love and cherished memories. In 1987, they completed their family with the welcoming of their son, Christopher.
John's life was a tapestry of friendships, family bonds, and unwavering faith. His presence in the church choir at Sts. Constantine and Helen was a source of joy and fulfillment. On June 4, 2024, John passed peacefully at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Tina, and son, Christopher; his siblings, George, Nick, Adrianna, Jim, Michael, and Calliope; their spouses, Irene, Eleni, Ted, Demetra, Sharon, and John; and many beloved aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
May his memory be eternal.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 12th, at 10 a.m. at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Marycrest Road, West Nyack, NY, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church , designated for the New Building Fund.
