Obituary

John G. 'Jack' Nolan, 95, passed away at his home in Piermont, New York. He is survived by his son, Gregory of Las Vegas, NV, his daughter, Catherine Caminiti of Piermont, and his other sons, John T. of Los Angeles, CA and Michael of Ocean City, NJ. Jack is also survived by his grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Alexandra and Cindy as well as two great grandchildren Ryann and Jack.

John was married twice. His first marriage to Rose Vozzy lasted 20 years and brought five children into the world, who remained central to his life. Though the marriage ended in divorce, Rose continued to be a valued part of the family's history until her passing.

Following the divorce, he married Sheila McHugh with whom he shared 45 devoted years. While they had no children together, Sheila was deeply loved by all five of his children and became an integral part of their lives. Both Rose and Sheila predeceased him in the same year, seven months apart— poignant chapter in a life marked by enduring love and connection.

John was also predeceased by his youngest son, Patrick, of Las Vegas and by his younger brother, Donald of Clifton Park, NY who had retired as the New York State Department of Education's Deputy Commissioner for Higher and Professional Education.

Following his graduation from LaSalle Institute, John started his employment with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, serving in various positions including Tax Examiner and Tax Collector. While in this job, John studied Accounting and various business subjects at the Evening Division of Russell Sage College. After ten years, John accepted the position Vice President and Finance Officer with Golden Arrow Lines, Plattsburgh, New York. This move was the beginning of a thirty-nine year career in the student transportation industry. He ended his career as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of National School bus Service, a public company, that operated over 4.400 school buses. The company was named Contractor of the Year by School Bus Fleet magazine and John received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Student Transportation Association.

John served for 13 years in the New York National Guard. He graduated from the Light and Heavy Weapons Course and the Infantry Officers School at Fort Benning, GA. Upon the conversion of his unit from infantry to armor, he attended the Armor Familiarization Course at Fort Knox, KY. Prior to leaving the Guard and moving to Plattsburgh, Lt. Nolan served as company commander of Company C, First Tank Battalion, 27th Armored Division of the NYNG.

In the first 16 years of his retirement and before Sheila's illness—he embraced life with boundless enthusiasm. These were golden years marked by adventure and camaraderie: nationwide and international travel that included sightseeing, major sporting events, and visits to premier golf destinations. He enjoyed occasional wine tastings with friends, and his enduring tradition of Wednesday night poker - more than forty games each year - was a source of laughter, strategy, and lasting friendship. Living nearly three decades beyond retirement, he turned time into a gift, savoring each moment and sharing it generously with those he loved.
