On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, Maria Paz "Patchie" Young (nee Manalili), passed away at the age of 75. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother and fought hard for life until her very last breath.
Paz is remembered for her tremendous strength, her loving nature and her incredible sense of fashion. Anyone who met Paz was charmed by her beauty, generosity, strong personality and her quick wit and sass.
After graduating Stella Marris College in the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1970, Paz migrated to the U.S. preceded by her older sister Fe to Queens, NY and joined by her parents Eusebio and Marcelina and sister Zenaida shortly after. They all lived in the same apartment building so Eusebio could keep a close eye on his daughter who had many admirers. After a chance encounter at her sister Fe's home, Paz met the love of her life, her husband of 41 years until his passing, Salvador (Buddy) Young and she was happy to recount he parked in "her spot" at Fe's house and was annoyed by that. When retelling the story of how they met, she said she knew she was going to marry him the moment she saw him. They married in September 1975 and started their journey as parents to their only daughter, Rachelisa "Rachel" Hope in August 1976.
Paz worked at Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Florence Nightingale, and numerous other adult health care and rehabilitation facilities across New York City as a high-level administrator and Director. Outside of work, Paz enjoyed hosting her family during holidays and get togethers, shopping, her shoe and purse collection. She always made sure to look her best for her husband and he returned his love by always making her laugh and showering her with compliments. Paz was also an avid baker and her innate talent for making delicious cakes for family functions will be missed. She loved traveling back to the Philippines for vacations with her husband. Paz and Buddy eventually moved to Tappan, NY in 1989 where they bought their dream home and will be joined again in eternal rest.
Paz is predeceased by her father Eusebio, her mother Marcelina, her husband Salvador and her sisters, Ruth Alcaide, Carolina Diwa, Erlina Felix and Zenaida Manalili. She is survived by her only daughter Rachel, her daughter-in-law Dominique; her sisters Myrna Ascano and Fe DeGuzman; and her grandchildren, Bella Rose and Shiloh Hope as well as her grand-dogs Rambo and Bruno (whom she was terrified of but admired from afar). Paz is also lovingly remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews whom she valued and cherished.
A celebration of Paz's well-lived life will take place at Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan on Friday, August 2nd from 3pm to 7pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:30am with burial to follow at Tappan Cemetery in Tappan, NY.
