IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary T.
Gormley
November 18, 1928 – November 16, 2023
94, of Harrington Park, NJ, passed away on Thursday November 16, 2023. She slipped away quietly and peacefully after slowly succumbing to Alzheimer's. She was born and raised in the Bronx by her German dad, Joseph Popp, and Irish mom, Norah, née Dolan with her younger sister Rose. She was an excellent student attending the Ursuline Academy where she excelled especially in her 4 years of Latin courses. She could tell you the root meaning of any word in the dictionary, and we spent years trying to stump her. She met the love of her life, Edward, at a high school party and spent the next 70 years by his side.
While busy raising four children she found time to sew beautiful clothes for the family, needlepoint dozens of pillows and artwork, and make quilts, many offered as raffle prizes for charities. And still she was always be there when we needed her.
Mary loved music and was a wonderful piano player and singer. She was deeply religious and was active in many church activities, including the choir. A lifelong commitment to attending Mass she frequently walked to daily Mass.
Having a very large extended family we celebrated many holidays, birthdays, and special occasions with dozens of close family members - all the time. We heard many stories of childhood in the Bronx, like roller skating on worn-out metal wheels and other games played on the sidewalk and street, and fun times with family.
Mary loved creating order, making a home and life that could be well-managed. And she could be adventurous - learning to ski and waterski in her 40's. She had a sense of humor that could be incisive. Mary was a kind, sweet and loving woman who made this world a better place and she will be deeply missed.
Mary is survived by her sister Rose, her daughter Elizabeth, her sons Christopher and Peter, her daughter-in-law Maureen and her granddaughter Arwen. She is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Norah, her husband Edward, her son Ted and her granddaughter Maria.
