Mary Theresa Clarke, "Maureen" to all, passed away peacefully on Nov. 30 after a long illness, departing this life not far from where she came into it. A fearless, loving and kind hearted daughter of Galway and Monaghan by way of the Bronx, she is survived by her husband of 64 years, Andrew Clarke; her four children: Andrew with Pamela, Kevin with Megan, Michael with Monica, and Deirdre with Dave; seven grandchildren: Andrew, Padraic, Liam, Eoin, Aidan, Elaine and Declan; and many nieces and nephews.
She was born on Nov. 8, 1937 in the Bronx to Michael and Bridget Martin. A proper young lady of Highbridge, she attended St. Catharine Academy. She and Andy raised four children in Blauvelt, N.Y. She worked for many years at Volvo Cars of America in Rockleigh, N.J., where she had many wonderful work friends and colleagues.
She was one of the city's great céilí dancers but despite much effort was unable to pass these superior skills on to her children. She loved the beach and she loved her walking! It was pointless to try to keep up. She was fortunate to spend many years in her retirement wintering in Boynton Beach, Fla., and summering in Barnegat, N.J., near L.B.I. and her favorite Loveladies beach.
She loved to sit by the kitchen phone and laugh and talk with her girlfriends and her sisters, Catherine O'Donnell and Patsy Noonan, who predeceased her. She cared for her children, even after they were long grown, and her grandchildren however she could. Her life was not always easy, but she never complained about anything and she remained gracious, generous and kindly to all.
She will be greatly missed, but she will be remembered with terrific fondness as a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She was fierce and funny; she did not suffer fools, but she did welcome everybody. She loved to have a good time, to sing and to throw parties for family and friends. Everyone had to take a turn performing something at them. This is recommended.
She will be waked on Dec. 4, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan, N.Y.
Her life will be celebrated in a memorial Mass on Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine of Alexandria parish in Blauvelt.
