Obituary

Nancy Jane Delaney Nawoichyk, BS, RN, of Pearl River, NY passed surrounded by her family on March 15, 2026. Born August 10, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to Douglas and Marjorie Delaney. Growing up in Brooklyn she attended Fort Hamilton High School Class of 1958, and graduated from Lutheran Medical Center School of Nursing in 1961. Nancy joined the family nursing legacy, following her mother, and became a strong role model for both her Daughter Nancy, BSN, RN and her Granddaughter Rebecca, BSN, RN.

Nancy and Chester began their life together 65 years ago with an amazing love story. The adventure started when Chet was working at Rockland State Hospital and Nancy was doing her nursing school psychiatric rotation there. They knew it was love at first sight! They met, were engaged, and married in 1961. As everyone knows, behind every good husband there is an outstanding wife. As their family grew, Chet would be cooking and Nancy would be supporting his scouting, auxiliary police, and Knights of Columbus endeavors. She would be sewing patches and typing newsletters. Many smoky scout uniforms were washed and packed for the next adventure. If Chet needed it, Nancy had it ready and held down the fort while he was helping others. They were the perfect couple.

Together they raised a loving family; James Nawoichyk (Marie), Nancy “Janie” Bierhoff, and John Nawoichyk (Wendy). She is extremely proud of her Grandchildren, Rebecca Leyburn (Drew), Molly Nawoichyk, Grant Nawoichyk (Isabella), Dana Bauer, Gena Cilento (Anthony) and Anthony Bauer. Of course her Great Grandson Jacob Leyburn could do no wrong, along with Great Granddaughters Taylor Caramanica, Ava and Olivia Cilento. Nancy is survived by her Brother Richard Delaney, and his Wife Sally, her Brother-in-law John Nawoichyk, and his Wife Claire, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her Husband Chester (2021), her parents, Brother-in-law Victor Nawoichyk and his Wife Frances - “Cookie”.

During her nursing career Nancy rose to the position of Head Evening Supervisor at Nyack Hospital. While doing this she continued her education and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, NY in May 1981 with a B.S. in Psychology. After retiring she worked as a home care nurse and worked at Cardinal McCloskey Children and Family Services as the agency nurse. Her final step in her career was at St. Vincent’s Psychiatric Hospital in Harrison, for almost two decades.

Nancy was well known for her crafting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. Many of her family and friends are proud recipients of her hard work created with lots of love. One of her proudest works is her book published in 2009, “The Delaney Family of Churchville, Nova Scotia.” Nancy was the keeper of all the family stories and she made sure no story was ever lost. This book turned the oral history of the Delaney Family into written history, to ensure that it would be preserved for generations to come. Her ancestry sleuthing did not stop there, as she did extensive research for the Nawoichyk Family, and other branches of the family tree as well. If you mentioned you were looking into your family history, Nancy was on it.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 21st from 1-4pm at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan with services starting at 4pm. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill.
