IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert George
Griepenburg
April 12, 1923 – August 3, 2023
Robert George Griepenburg, 100, of Dumont, NJ passed away peacefully on August 3, 2023.
Robert was born on April 12, 1923 in Dumont, NJ.
After attending Dumont schools he worked various local jobs; pig farmer, radio tower climber, delivery driver.
In 1943 he joined the US Navy and served on the USS Cetus in the South Pacific.
After WWII he bought a Ford truck, a push mower, a rake and a spade and started his landscaping business.
Robbie met the smart and lovely Emma A. Bott, of Jersey City, at a regional Luther League outing. They wed in January of 1950, built their own house with the help of their brothers, and had four children, Linda, Robert, Diane and David.
Time spent; working, gardening, beekeeping, swimming in backyard pool, church, choral groups, bowling, serving on Dumont Shade Tree Commission, winter road trips to Florida, helping family, friends and neighbors. All the time while whistling and singing.
Robert was a long time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dumont and a tenor in the choir from age 12 on... and more recently a choir member of Christ Lutheran Church in Woodcliff Lake.
After retiring he and Emma bought a vacation cabin in New York State where many happy times were had and memories made.
Robert was predeceased by his 10 brothers and sisters, and by his beloved wife, Emma (2010).
He is survived by his daughter Linda Czetty and her husband Stephen; son Robert and his wife Patricia; daughter Diane Aita and her husband Jules; son David and his wife Susan; and 12 grandchildren - Stephen, Brian, Michelle; Nicholas, Brenda; Michael, Sean, David, Renee; Daniel, Mark, Jill. And by 18 beautiful great grandchildren.
Robert was a practical, hard-working man. He was persistent and never left a job undone. Smart, patient, selfless, and kind to all. A help to family, friends and neighbors. At age 95 he could still be seen chopping wood in the backyard or climbing a ladder high up in a tree to capture a swarm of honeybees, all the time with a song of joy.
He loved all the old love songs. His favorite hymn is "How Great Thou Art."
Loved by all. A gem. Truly a gift from God.
