IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Christopher
Mooney Sr.
July 11, 2022
Thomas Christopher Mooney Sr., a resident of Orangeburg, NY since 1959, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 11, 2022, at the age of 93 surrounded by loved ones.
He was born on December 2,1928 to Michael and Jane Mooney in Clounmacon, County Kerry, Ireland and grew up on the family farm. Shortly after immigrating to New York City in 1949, Tom joined the US Army serving honorably during the Korean War. Upon his return, he married the love of his life Mary Anne Fitzgerald on January 15, 1955. Together, he and Mary settled in Orangeburg, NY and raised their five children in the house Tom helped to build
Tom was a graduate of Pratt Institute and worked for the Marble Setters Union in New York City, serving as a union representative as well. Among the many buildings he worked on, Tom set marble in the Twin Towers in the 1960s, the tallest buildings in the world at the time. For most of his career, Tom worked as an Engineer for the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection, and served as a union representative as well. Tom was a devout parishioner of St. Catharine's Church in Blauvelt and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Div. 3 as well as a founding member of their Bagpipe Band. Tom played in the band alongside his daughter Christine for many years. Tom was the 1977 Parade Commander and the 1988 Grand Marshal of the Rockland County St. Patrick's Day parade and has marched (or in recent years, has rode in style in a classic car) in nearly all 58 of their parades. His family loved to cheer for him at the parade and hear his stories of living back in the "old country". Tom was equally proud of his Irish heritage as he was of the American roots he put down here with his family. Tom was active in the Raymond W. DeMeola VFW Post and held many offices including Commander and Chief of Staff. Rockland County has dedicated a special day in his honor as a show of appreciation for his lifetime of work supporting veterans and his commitment to serving others in the community. Tom was an altruistic, kind, and humble man and he was loved by many, including his eight grandchildren who called him Pop Pop.
Tom was predeceased by his parents Michael and Jane Mooney, his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Anne Mooney, his brothers Michael Mooney and Stephen Mooney and his son Thomas C. Mooney Jr. He is survived by his siblings Bridget "Bridie" Sawula, Nuala O'Keeffe, and Margaret "Dolly" Brosnan, his children Christine Mooney of Piermont, Mary Jane Feuster (Perry) of Stony Point, Kerry Mooney (Susan) of Seattle, WA and Eileen Scollan (Thomas) of Tappan; his grandchildren Erin (Tim), Eric (Bess) and Ryan Feuster, Michael and Megan Mooney, and Patrick, Brianna and Brendan Scollan; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, from 4-8pm at Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 21, 2022, at 10am at St. Catharine's Church in Blauvelt, NY with burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Tom's honor to either the VFW Post 1615 Raymond W. DeMeola Memorial Post (PO. Box 196, Blauvelt, NY 10913) or a veterans organization close to your heart.
