Vartkes (Khachig) Vartanian entered into eternal peace surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of love, devotion, and warmth. Born on October 17, 1943, in Qamishli, Syria, to Andreas and Rosa Vartanian, Vartkes grew up alongside his four brothers. From a young age, Vartkes was active in his community and grew into an excellent soccer player, later becoming one of the finest players on Aleppo’s Homenetmen team.
In 1974, Vartkes immigrated to the United States, living in California before making New York his home. In 1977, the New York Homenetmen Chapter was born and founded under the inspiration and leadership of Vartkes Vartanian. Vartkes dedicated years of service to his community, passing through the ranks of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) in New York, serving as the Chairman of the New York Branch, and serving as Vice Chairman of the Regional Board for two terms. He was also a deeply committed scout leader, guiding and shaping the youth. Additionally, for years he served on the Board of Trustees for St. Illuminator's Armenian Apostolic Cathedral.
Vartkes met the love of his life, Chake Taghalian, in 1976. They married in 1979 and raised two loving daughters, Rosette and Natalie. Vartkes was a selfless and devoted husband, father, and the proudest grandfather to his five grandchildren. Whether he was playing backgammon, cards, or cheering them on at events, he cherished showing up for his family. He was the life of every party, always singing, dancing, telling jokes, and sharing words of wisdom.
His loyalty to his family and Armenian community will carry on.
Vartkes is survived by his wife, Chake; his daughters, Rosette and her husband Dr. Tro Kalayjian, and Natalie and her husband Anthony Jourbadjian; his five grandchildren, Ari, Aleen, Raffi, Alec, and Luke; and his brother, Manuel Vartanian and family.
