IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter Alan
Wilson
January 28, 1949 – July 7, 2023
Walter Alan Wilson of Closter, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 7, 2023, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Alan, as he liked to be called, is survived by his wife, Canice Wilson, his two children, Heather and Kevin, and two grandchildren, Amber and Haley. He was born in Jersey City in January of 1949. He was adopted by Walter Edward Wilson and Ottilie Emma Hubert Wilson from Fort Lee as an infant. They eventually moved to Closter when he was a small child, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Northern Valley Old Tappan in 1967. During his youth, he was part of Boy Scout Troop 63 where he eventually earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from high school, he joined the Merchant Marine where he worked in the engine rooms on many ships, first serving on John B Waterman, traveling the world, including to Vietnam during the war until 1971. During this time, he also continued with scouting as an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 63. He then joined the Army National Guard as a reservist where he served until 1977. Alan married Canice in August of 1972 and have been married for almost 51 years. He also joined the Closter Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Corps in 1972 joining his father, who was already a member. He actively served on the ambulance corps for over 50 years until his death responding to over 9,500 calls. During his time on the ambulance corps, he served as the captain, president, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees. Alan, during the late 80s and early 90s again was involved in scouting as first the Cubmaster and Webelos Leader of Pack 20 and then the Scoutmaster of Troop 63 where he helped many scouts, including his son, earn the rank of Eagle. In scouting, he served as the Northern Valley District as Hike to Bobcat Chairman, Roundtable Commissioner, Official First Aide Staff leader for the District and the Bergen Council Scout Show. He served on the Bergen Council Blue Ribbon Committee for Cub Scouting. He earned the Webelos Den Leader, Scouter Key, and Commissioner Arrowhead Awards. He helped organize the Klondike Derby at Camp Gaw in 1991. And on June 6, 1990, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which is the highest form of recognition a local council may bestow upon an individual for service to scouting. He was a proud blue-collar worker who worked largely as a machinist for Centrico (later GEA Westfalia Separator) where he retired in 2017. He was a loving father and grandfather, doting husband, and a lifelong volunteer. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Closter Volunteer Ambulance Corps in his name as that was what his passion was, helping others.
