Gelhaus
December 10, 1931 – October 28, 2024
On Monday, October 28, William August Gelhaus, 92, of Tappan, passed away surrounded by family.
He was born to William and Signe Gelhaus, in the Tremont section of the Bronx on December 10, 1931.
He attended State University of New York, Farmingdale. In 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the military police division. In 1955, he joined the New York City Fire Department rising to rank of Captain before retiring in 1977.
He then worked at the Museum of the City of New York, and then the American Craft Museum, now named the Museum of Art and Design.
He was a life-long New York Giants and Mets fan. He enjoyed culture including classical music, Broadway shows, movies from the 1940's, and opera especially Richard Wagner's Ring. He was an avid student of WWII history, and publicly-traded companies.
He is survived by his children Lisa Gelhaus (Bernard Gluckstern) of Washington, D.C.; Andrew Gelhaus (Tammy) of Goshen, New York; and Tracy McIntyre (Chris) of Bethesda, Maryland. He has five grandchildren: Justin (Meagan) Butler-Gelhaus of Highland Mills, New York; Amanda (Mike) Manning of Boston, Massachusetts; and Brent Gelhaus of Goshen; Matthew McIntyre of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jennifer McIntyre of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One great grandchild Kara Butler-Gelhaus of Highland Mills, New York.
Funeral will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Moritz Funeral Home, at 98 Rte 303, Tappan, New York. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. with the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park, 100 Mill Street, Putnam Valley, NY 10958
