Obituary

William Anthony Ranke, 98, of Orangeburg, NY, a distinguished World War II Veteran of the United States Army (1943-1945), passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 12th, 2023.  Beloved husband of Jean Ranke, predeceased, and married for 72 years.  Devoted father to Carole (Frank), Janet, and William Jr. (Sheryl).  Cherished Grandfather to Kristen (Josh), Christopher (Nicole), Nancy (Joe), Michael (Mara), Daniel, and Susan (Ryan).  Treasured Great-Grandfather to Joey, Leo, Jack, Christopher, Collin, Brandon, Lyla, Agnes, and Samantha.

Bill was born on July 25th, 1925 in the Bronx, NY.  He was the only child of Henry Ranke and Antoinette Ruth Dunsing.  He grew up in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx, and spent summers in New Paltz, NY.

He proudly and bravely served his country in World War II, as a Sergeant in U.S. General Patton's renowned 94th Infantry Division.  While in combat, he earned the Bronze Star Medal.  The military telegram, dated March, 1945, reads as follows:  'His intrepid courage, efficiency and loyalty to duty reflect the highest of credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.'  Bill also received the Purple Heart for being wounded during combat, while fighting back Nazi forces in Germany.  He will always be the definition of an American hero, and a true representation of the Greatest Generation.

Bill returned from service and attended Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY, and later received his Masters Degree in Social Work from Fordham University.  On June 26, 1949 he would marry Jean Martha Lewis, and they would go on to be married for 72 years.  He moved to Orangeburg, NY in 1961 to raise his young family, and continue to build his career as the Chief Probation Officer for the City of New York in the Bronx.  He retired at the age of 62 and enjoyed taking trips to Florida and Long Beach Island, going golfing and fishing, and spending time with his beautiful family and many friends.

Bill was dedicated to being a loving husband and father to his wife and three children throughout his life.  He also appreciated and valued his many close, life-long friendships that he was so thankful and appreciative of.  His grandchildren will remember him as being their own personal American hero, and are beyond thankful to have had so many wonderful years spent with him.

Bill will always be remembered by family and friends for his kindness and welcoming presence, and his unconditional love that seemed to know no bounds.  His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life.  His legacy, and many valuable lessons, will live on through them, as they honor him and his memory for years to come.

There will be a small private Mass and burial for the family on Monday, August 21st, 2023.
